UNDERSTANDING OF LIVER FUNCTION TEST IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF KAMALA VIS-À-VIS LIVER DISEASES

ABSTRACT
Liver is the largest organ of the body which plays central role in digestion and metabolism. Liver diseases are a major cause for the morbidity and mortality worldwide. One in forty deaths are due to liver diseases. Irrespective of the cause, the hallmark symptom of liver diseases is jaundice and perhaps the most reliable marker of severity. Liver disorders are seen in Ayurveda mainly through the windows of Kamala, the prime feature being Bheka varna (yellowish discoloration). Presently, it has become utmost important to diagnose the exact cause of jaundice thereby adopting the particular treatment protocols to prevent further progression into life threatening conditions. Diagnosis of liver disease’s s greatly aided by the availability of reliable and sensitive tests of liver injury and function commonly called as LFT(Liver Function Tests). Liver diseases and their chronicity with fatality, can be effectively managed and prevented through the wealth of knowledge in Ayurveda for safeguarding the health interests of the country.
