ESTIMATION OF SERUM HEPATOCYTE GROWTH FACTOR AND TRANSFORMING GROWTH FACTOR BETA 1 LEVELS IN PATIENTS WITH INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE. CORRELATION WITH DISEASE ACTIVITY

ABSTRACT
Estimation of serum hepatocyte growth factor and transforming growth factor beta 1 levels in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Correlation with disease activity. Objectives: Reports showed increased levels of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in patients with active inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). This study aims to assess plasma levels of HGF and TGF- ß in patients with IBD in different stages of disease activity. Design and Methods: TGF-beta and HGF levels were measured in 75 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, 75 Crohn's disease (CD) patients and 20 controls using ELISA and correlated with disease activity indices and inflammatory markers. Results: TGF- ß and HGF were higher in UC and CD patients than control group. Their levels were significantly higher in the UC than in CD. The levels of white blood cell count(WBC), platelet count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR), calprotectin and C-reactive protein(CRP) were higher in UC and CD group than control. No difference in their levels between the UC and CD patients. Disease activity in CD and UC correlated with TGF-β and HGF level. Conclusion: HGF and TGF- β concentrations are higher in IBD than controls. There is a positive correlation between both TGF- β and HGF and disease severity. TGF-β and HGF could be acute phase markers of IBD. CRP, ESR, platelet count and WBC count can be markers in the early diagnosis of IBD activity
