ABSTRACT
Allergic rhinitis is similar to the disease vataj pratishaya described in Ayurvedic classics. It is one of the major
vause which can cause disturbance in routine work. Allergic rhinitis is a global health problem affecting at least 10
to 25% of the population and its prevalence is increasing. Purpose: To determine the feasibility of recruiting and
retaining participants in a clinical trial with Haridra khand and Tribhuvan Mishran on patients suffering from vataj
Pratishaya (Allergic Rhinitis). Design: Case series. Study Intervention: Oral medication with 5 gm of Haridra
khand and 1 tablet of Tribhuvan Mishran 250 mg twice a day for 2 weeks. The Ayurvedic parameters grading
scale was used for evaluation. Results: Patients were of age group ranging from 16 years to 73 years with average
age of 40 years and S.D. of 15.76 ± 2.8. Comparing baseline to 14th day post treatment, the percentage of
improvement ranged from 25% to 100% with average improvement of 86.04%. Comparison of medians between
baseline and day 7th and 14th day indicated very significant improvement (P<.001) using Wilcoxon match paired
test. No adverse events were reported during the study. Conclusion: Haridra khand and Tribhuvan Mishran
combination therapy may be beneficial in the management of vataj pratishaya (Allergic Rhinitis). It is feasible to
recruit and retain participants for further studies on vataj pratishaya. It is important to validate these findings and
investigate the mechanism of action using a larger sample and rigorous research design.
