A PROSPECTIVE STUDY ON EXTENSION OF CLINICAL PHARMACY SERVICE IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY DEPARTMENT

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Drug utilization is an ongoing review of prescribing, dispensing, and use of medication which promotes the rational drug use in OBG.[1] The study was conducted to know the rationality of drug utilization in OBG patients. Methodology: A prospective study was conducted in hospital over a period of 9 months. The data were collected in a specially intended form after obtaining the consent and assessment was done for rational use of the drugs. The obtained data was subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Results: Among 506 patients, 25.1% were in-patients, in which 68% were pregnant and 32% non-pregnant. The most commonly observed diseases were white discharge, abdominal pain, UTI followed by anaemia. Supplements were the most commonly prescribed drugs followed by antibiotics (cephalosporin’s; 55%), analgesics (NASIDs; 10.47%), antiulcers (H2 antagonist; 20%), antifungal agents (8.3%), antiemetics (6.5%) and miscellaneous. In pregnant women, the majority prescribed was category A (Mean+ SD2.13 ± 0.42) and rarely category X. In lactation category minimal risk drugs were prescribed.[2] The drug- drug interactions were observed in 38 (7.5%) patients; in which 37 (6.9%) interactions were found in pregnant. Interestingly ADRs were absent, the Poly-pharmacy was observed in a very less number of prescriptions. Six drug information about the dose adjustment & alternative therapies were provided. Majority of the patients received patient counselling (99.4%) and their feedback showed pharmacist services are essential. Conclusion: This study clearly showed that rational use of drug, it’s continues monitoring is essential and also suggests the need of pharmaceutical care expert.
