A RARE CASE OF VANISHING LUNG SYNDROME ASSOCIATED WITH ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

ABSTRACT

Vanishing Lung Syndrome was first described in a case report by Burke in 1937.[1] Since then several more case reports have been published in various journals worldwide.[2-5] It is most often confused with pneumothorax and inadvertent insertion of intercostal drainage is not a rarity even among reported cases.[2,5] It mostly occurs in young thin males in their thirties who are smokers[6] but cases have been diagnosed in middle aged men as well. Mainstay of treatment is bullectomy which often results in return to good health with no residual respiratory dysfunction.[7] Thus highlights the importance of diagnosing such cases early as in older patients surgical intervention is associated with higher morbidity and mortality[8] in stark contrast to younger individuals.
