IN VITRO ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME WATERY PLANT EXTRACTS AGAINST SOME EYE INFECTION CAUSING BACTERIA

ABSTRACT
Through a period extended from June to October, 2016, twenty four bacterial isolates were collected from Ibn- Al haitham teaching hospital for eyes in Baghdad from patients with eye infections. Out of these 24 isolates, 10(41.67%) isolates were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 10(41.67%) isolates were Staphylococcus aureus and 4(16.66%) isolates were Escherichia coli. Pseudomonas aerogenosa isolates shows a high level resistance to most of the antibiotics under test and the highest resistant antibiotics were Ampicillin and Cefazolin 10(100%) resistance rate. While the most effective antibiotic against P. aerogenosa isolates was Amikacin which it gave the lowest resistance rate 2(20%). Escherichia coli isolates were also resist to most antibiotics under the test which gave 4(100%) resistance rate to Ampicillin, Aztreonam, Ampicillin-Sulbactam and Amoxicillin-clavulanic, Cefazolin, Cefotaxime, Ceftazidime and Ceftriaxone, while the most effective antibiotic was also Amikacin which it gave the lowest resistance rate 1(18.18%). Staphylococcus aureus isolates showed a high level rate to Ampicillin, Erythromycin, Oxacillin and Ceftriaxone which gave 10(100%), but the most effective antibiotic was Gentamicin which it gave 1(10%) resistance rate. Hibiscus sabdariffa, Camellia sinensis (Green tea and black tea), Terminalia catappa and Lawsonia inermis (Henna) extracts were prepared in different concentrations (100, 50, 25 and 12, 5 mg/ml). The result of antibacterial activity test of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract showed that the Hibiscus sabdariffa extract was the most effective extract on bacterial isolates in all concentrations compared with the other plant extracts under study (significant differences at P ≤ 0.05). On other hand Terminalia catappa extract was effective on bacterial isolates only in 100, 50 and 25 mg/ml concentrations and not gave antibacterial activity in last concentration. The result of antibacterial activity test of Camellia sinensis (Green tea and black tea) and Lawsonia inermis (Henna) extracts showed that Camellia sinensis (Green tea and black tea) and Lawsonia inermis (Henna) extracts don’t gave antibacterial activity against all bacterial isolates under test (G-ve and G+ve bacteria) in all concentrations (100, 50, 25 and 12.5 mg/ml concentrations).
