ABSTRACT
The inhibition of the corrosion of mild steel in 1 N HCl and 1 N H2SO4 by leaves extract of Leucas aspera has been studied at different temperatures by weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarizaion method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, FT-IR and SEM studies. The inhibition efficiency increases with increasing inhibitor concentration and with increasing temperature in both acid medium. The results of weight loss studies correlated well with those of impedance and polarization studies. From the results of weight loss studies at various temperatures, the mode of adsorption is predominately chemisorption. Further, the adsorption has been found to follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic and activation parameters have been obtained from temperature studies. The study reveals that the extract of Leucas aspera leaves act as good inhibitor for preventing corrosion of mild steel in acid media. Mechanism of corrosion inhibition of Leucas aspera on mild steel is explored with the help of impedance and polarization measurements. The morphology of protection film is studied by FT-IR and SEM techniques.
Keywords: Leucas aspera, corrosion inhibitors, AC impedance, polarization.
