ABSTRACT
Introducton: Among the various cell contents, calcium oxalate crystals of different types are found in different organs of the plant. They may be present in almost all parts of the plant. They have great diagnostic value. Presence and absence of crystals, tannin and other characters and dimensions are useful in correct identification of crude drugs. Help in detection of adulterants. Panchavalkala is one of the ideal combinations for a vast range of therapeutics focused in Ayurveda like Vranaprakshalana&Ropana, Shothahara, Upadanshahara, Visarpahara, etc. Vagbhatta has mentioned Panchavalkaladi Sneha for Yoni Pichu Dharana, but in present study Varti form is selected for the management of Upapluta Yonivyapad. Aim: To know the impact of cellular and ergastic content present in the finished product by evaluate physico-chemical, phytochemical and microscopical profiles. Materials and Methods: Raw drug of Panchvalkaladi varti were collected from pharmacy of Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar. This drug authenticated raw drugs followed by subjecting it to detailed pharmacognostical, physicochemical and phytochemical (including Thin Layer Chromatography) analysis as per standard protocol. Results: Powder microscopy of the drugs showed presence of rosette & prismatic crystals of calcium oxalate, tannin oil globule, rhomboidal crystal. Water soluble extractive value (10.8%) is more than alcohol soluble extractive value (3.76%) and pH value is 7.5. Preliminary phytochemical study also reveals the presence of glycoside, flavonoid, alkaloid, tannin and other phenolic compounds. Conclusion: The findings of the study will be useful in the identification and standardization of the Panchvalkaladi varti which is support the intended action of the formulation in vaginal discharge.
