ABSTRACT
Lantana camara, also known as big-sage, wild-sage, red-sage, white-sage, is an active member of Verbenaceae family. It is a small perennial shrub with flowers of varying colours. Helminthiasis is a common condition prevailing in most part of the world due to worm infestation. The present study aims at exploring the anthelmintic properties of aqueous extract of leaves of Lantana camara Linn. using Indian earthworms, Phertima posthuma. The study was carried at 10mg/ml, 20mg/ml, 30mg/ml, 40mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 100mg/ml, 200mg/ml, 300mg/ml, 400mg/ml and 500mg/ml, using piperazine citrate as standard. The study was carried out for a total period of 5 hours. A negative control group was maintained using normal saline. The time taken for paralysis and death was calculated for all the groups. Lantana camara Linn. aqueous extract exhibited poor anthelmintic activity as compared to the standard drug. The study clearly reveals that Lantana camara Linn. aqueous extract is not a suitable drug of choice anthelmintic activity.
Keywords: Lantana camara, Phertima posthuma, earthworms and anthelmintic.
