IDENTIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ?-AMYLASE PRODUCING BACILLUS MEGATERIUM KLMI4

ABSTRACT

Of the different enzymes obtained from microorganisms (both fungi and bacteria), amylases are known to have much industrial as well as commercial applications. The present study aims at isolating amylase producing bacteria from agricultural soils of Kalaburagi district, Karnataka, India. Totally 105 different amylase producing isolates were obtained; of these, top four ranking strains were studied for consistency over three generations. Amongst them, the strain KLMI4 showed maximum amylolytic activity consistently and was selected for identification and characterization through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. It was observed to be a member of Bacillus megaterium cluster and was designated as B. megaterium KLMI4 strain.
