ABSTRACT

Hypothyroidism is a hypo metabolic clinical state resulting from inadequate production of thyroid hormones. We cannot find one to one co-relation with a single disease from Ayurveda classics, if we try to correlate the pathogenesis of Hypothyroidism according to the principles of Ayurveda, we find that it is basically caused due to dysfunctioning of the Agni. Hypofunctioning of Jatharagni, which in turn, affects Dhatvagni, eventually, brings out pathological sequence & ultimately, the diseased condition developed. Rapid weight gain is a main symptom in Hypothyroidism and Vidanga (Embelia ribes burm f.) promoted as a weight loss agent that supposedly enhances thyroid function. Total 18 patients were registerd with comfirmation from S.TSH, out of them 15 patients have completed the course of treatment. 6 Vidanga Vati was given thrice a day after meal with the luke warm water for the duration of 8 weeks. Vidanga (Embelia ribes Burm. f.) has showed statistically significant result on decreasing level of S.TSH and on almost all the sign and symptoms of Hypothyroidism. From the above study it has concluded that the drug Vidanga is effective to manage Hypothyroidism with no apparent evidence of complication.
