Abstract
PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF Ranunculus laetus LEAF EXTRACT

ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study was carried out to investigate the phytochemicals present in the leaf extract of Ranunculus laetus. Also, the bactericidal action of the extract was determined. Methods: The preliminary phytochemical analysis was carried out according to the standard procedures while as, the antibacterial activity was determined by disc diffusion method. Results: The results of our study revealed that the percentage yield of R. laetus was 22.0%. Also, the crude leaf extract of R. laetus contained maximum of the phytochemicals. The antibacterial activity of the plant extract was in the order of E. coli> S. aureus> P. aeruginosa> B. subtilis at different concentrations. Conclusion: Ranunculus laetus contained a good number of phytochemicals and the extract possessed potential antibacterial activity against Gram +ve and Gram –ve bacteria.
