REVIEW ARTICLE ON VILSMEIER HAACK REACTION AND ITS APPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of diverse heterocyclic compounds synthesized by Vilsmeier-Haack reagent. Chloromethyleneiminium salts, commonly known as highly versatile Vilsmeier-Haack reagent, usually generated in situ by the treatment of POCl3 with an N, N-disubstituted formamides (e.g., DMF) and is very useful in the synthetic transformations. The Vilsmeier-Haack reagent is an efficient, economical and mild reagent for the formylation of reactive aromatic and heteroaromatic substrates. A large volume of published literature over the last few decades preludes a comprehensive review. The article presents a comprehensive review on Vilsmeier-Haack reaction based compounds, synthesis and biological activity.
