EVALUATION OF SOME CHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF ABATTOIR SOIL IN KANO, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The research work was carried out to evaluate the abattoir soil chemical properties in Kano state. The study was conducted in three different locations, the first location were the effluent is first discharge, the second location was the middle of the drainage and the third is outside the drainage were farming activities are conducted. The parameters determined there pH, Total nitrogen, Available phosphorous, Organic carbon, Organic matter, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium, Cation exchange capacity and Base saturation. The level of Sodium and Potassium were found to be considerably higher while Available phosphorous, organic matter and organic carbon were found to be lower. This indicated that the abattoir effluent could lower the soil organic content there by reducing the space for microorganism and other beneficial soil biota to flourish. Abattoir should be situated away from farmlands and the effluent should not be used for irrigation purposes.
