SCREENING OF THE ALUMINIUM METAL STRESS TOLERANCE LEVEL IN SOME SOIL BACTERIA AND ON EARTHWORM PHERETIMA POSTHUMA

ABSTRACT

In living organism, a change in concentration in some elements may prove stressful to living organism and hence may cause toxicity to those affected organism. Metal toxicity or metal poisoning is the toxic effect of certain metals (in certain forms and doses) on life, which causes stress to an organism. Long term exposure of plants to Aluminum inhibits shoot growth via induction of nutrient (Mg, Ca, P) deficiencies, drought stress and phytohormone imbalances. In acidic soil, Aluminum becomes more soluble and potentially stressful to plants and other organisms. From the present study, it was seen that, higher concentration of Aluminium proves to be stressful to the bacteria whereas aluminium concentration used in the present study did not have any significant effect on the earthworms.
