NATURAL POLYSACCHARIDES FOR SPECIFIC TARGETING TO COLON - AN ASSESSMENT

ABSTRACT
The core intention is to enrich and update the knowledge in use of natural polysaccharides for specific targeting to colon. Extensive ranges of natural polysaccharides were available for the design and formulation of colon targeted drug delivery system such as synthetic azo polymers and natural or modified polysaccharides (guar gum,
xanthan gum, locust gum, inulin, dextrans, starch, amylose, pectins, tamarind gum, murunga gaum) degraded by the human colonic flora The researchers have used bundle of natural polysaccharides in combination with drug candidate. This review article is prepared by collecting all the relevant material from 1980 to till date to help the researcher to select the appropriate natural polysaccharide for colon targeted drug delivery system. Oral administration of conventional dosage forms usually dissolves in the stomach or intestinal and sop up from these regions of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) depends upon the physicochemical properties of the drug. It is a serious snag in conditions where localized delivery of the drugs in the colon is essential or in conditions where a drug needs to be protected from the aggressive environment of upper GIT. Oral delivery of drugs to the colon is precious in the management of diseases of colon such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, carcinomas and other infections.
