AREVIEW OF SURGICAL ASCITES CASES IN BAQUBA TEACHING HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Background: Ascites is a collection of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. And occurs when the fluid entering the peritoneal cavity is more than that return to circulation by capillaries and lymphatic vessels network. Many causes can lead to ascites, either general causes, like heart failure, renal failure, liver failure and hypoproteinemia, or local causes like malignancy of the abdominal cavity whether primary or secondary malignancy, or chronic infection of the peritoneum or portal hypertension. Aim of study: To find out the most common causes of surgical ascites, gender, age and the origin of the tumor in baquba teaching hospital. Patient and methods: A review of all cases of ascites admitted to Baquba teaching hospital during the period from 1st. Jun 2015 to 31 May 2017. Result: The total number of cases was (42), male was (26) and female (16), 38% of cases were recorded at the age group of [51-60] years. The most common causes (33) of surgical ascites recorded is malignant causes the common site of origin of malignancy is intra-abdominal (25). Conclusion: In this study the most common causes of ascites admitted to surgical unite were intra-abdominal malignancies.
