ABSTRACT
Background & Objectives: Both Hepatitis B and HIV infections are a serious global public health problems today leading to frequent HIV/HBV co infection. Seroprevalence study is important to assess the magnitude and dynamics of disease to decide upon the prevention and control strategies. The study aims to assess the prevailing prevalence of both the viral infections as well as the seroprevalence of HIV/HBV co-infection in West-Bengal, India. Materials and
Methods: Serum samples collected from 100 sero positive HIV patients attending the ART centre of a tertiary care centre of Eastern India. Serum samples reactive for HIV antibodies were tested for HBsAg by ELISA test using ERBA LISA HEPATITIS B test kit. Results and Conclusion: A seroprevalence of 27% was found for HBsAg of which 31.75% patients were males and 18.91% were females mainly in the age-group of 21-30 years. Thus the high prevalence of HIV/HBV co-infection among HIV patients attending the ART centre is a cause for concern and warrants urgent intervention.
Keywords: Hepatitis B, HIV, HIV/HBV co infection, ART centre.
