ABSTRACT
Due to worldwide persistent rise in prevalence of cancer and cancer related deaths, it is mandatory to take extensive prevention modalities. Literature has suggested that antioxidants agents or dietary elements with antioxidant properties may act as naturally occurring cancer prevention agents by decreasing oxidative stress. This review is aimed to summarize the role of antioxidants in pevention of cancer based on recent trends and scientific studies that have been documented over the past few decades. We also attempted to define and classify antioxidants in Primary/natural antioxidants and Secondary/ synthetic antioxidants category. We summarized the role of antioxidants in prevention of cancer. Mechanism of different types of antioxidant vitamin, mineral or enzymatic substance such as selenium, copper and zinc, carotenoids, vitamin E and D, flavonoids and phenolic compounds have been discussed in brief. We have also described food sources of common antioxidants. The role of antioxidant in cancer prevention or treatment is still a controversial issue, as a result well controlled prospective clinical trials of antioxidants on large sample size is obligatory to ascertain the efficacy and consequence of antioxidant therapy in prevention and treatment of cancer in future.
