ABSTRACT
Three transition metal (II) complexes with 4'-(1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (bitpy) ML2 (M = Co, Ni and Cd, L = bitpy) have synthesized and characterized by using elemental analysis, UV–visible, NMR, Mass, electrical conductance, magnetic moment and IR spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity of the complexes was evaluated by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. In this work, we have observed that the newly synthesized Cd (II) complex was found to be much more effective free radical scavengers than the ligand and other complexes. The antitumour activities of bitpy and its metal complexes were tested by MTT assay against human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines. The Cd(II) complex exhibited an potential effect against MCF-7 cell lines. Antimicrobial assay of the above ligand and complexes against two gram positive (S.aureus, B.subtilis), two gram negative (K.aerogenes, E.coli) and two fungi (A.niger, C.albicans) showed that the ligand exhibited significant activity than the other complexes.
Keywords: bitpy, metal (II) complex, antioxidatant, anticancer, antimicrobial.
