NEWLY RECRUITED NURSES AT A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL IN BENGALURU, KARNATAKA, INDIA: ARE THEY HEALTHY?

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pre-placement examination determines to enable and provide employees with apt occupational environment so that they are adapted to it in their full capacity. Aims: To determine the health issues among newly recruited staff nurses in a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore and to determine the pre-existing morbidities among staff nurses at the time of recruitment. Methods: This was a cross sectional study done among newly recruited staff nurses in a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore, India. Data was collected from the pre-placement examinations done from January 2011 to December 2013. The format for the examination contains socio-demographic details, medical, personal and surgical history, relevant systemic examinations and investigations. The data was collected from each nurse when they were recruited at a single contact. Results: The common morbidities identified among 810 newly recruited nurses were dust allergy 87 (10.7%), gynaecological problems 34 (4.2%), hypothyroidism 32 (4.0%) and musculoskeletal disorders 26 (3.2%). Among the nurses 197 (24.3%) were underweight and 121 (14.9%) were overweight and also the BMI showed an increasing pattern with age. Conclusion: The pre-placement examination showed multiple morbidities and malnutrition among nurses. It is necessary to have a positive approach to reduce the morbidities and a preventive approach to reduce such instances among the younger aspirants.
