PRE-TREATMENT WITH LISINOPRIL AND/ OR LOVASTATIN LESSEN AND AMELIORATE CARDIOTOXICITY OF DOXORUBICIN IN RATS

ABSTRACT
The association of doxorubicin induced cardiotoxicity and free radicals are well established, but the involvement of doxorubicin induced free radicals in the antitumor effect of doxorubicin is somewhat confusing. The aims of the present study were to assess the influence of pretreatment with lovastatin and lisinopril in attenuation of doxorubicin induced acute cardiotoxicity in rats. Forty Sprague Dawley male rats were used in this study, which treated with doxorubicin alone and then pretreated with lisinopril and/ or lovastatin for ten days, then cardiac biomarkers and cardiac histology were done for evaluation the cardioprotective effects of lisinopril and/ or lovastatin. Doxorubicin leads to significant cardiac damage while lovastatin and/ or lisinopril pretreamemt leading to significant attenuation of doxorubicin induced acute cardiotoxicity in rats through amelioration of serum cardiac biomarker levels and histopathological changes. Conclusions: Pre-treatment with lisinopril and/or lovastatin attenuates acute doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats.
