PREVALENCE OF BREAST CANCER AND SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS AMONG WOMEN IN QASSIM REGION, SAUDI ARABIA

ABSTRACT
Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of death among them worldwide. The incidence and prevalence rates vary considerably and have shown marked geographical variations and influence of various life style and environmental risk factors. Objectives: 1. To find the Prevalence of Breast cancer among 35 yrs to 60 years age group women. 2. To identify some of the demographic variables associated with breast cancer. Materials & Methods: A retrospective record review study was conducted during the period from January 2007 to December 2014 through the mammography program of Qassim region, central Saudi Arabia. A total of 16842 study participants details taken and all those asymptomatic women in the age group of 35 to 60 years undergone mammography screening programme as per demographic situation of the Qassim region and programme guidelines. Results: For the breast cancer detection, mammography screening was done in four major places Buraidah (King Fahd Specialist Hospital), Unayzah (King Saud hospital), Al Rass General Hospital and some through mobile clinic places (where no hospital based fixed Mammographic screening unit in that area) of Qassim region. Average Prevalence of breast cancer was noticed among the Qassim region was 226.7/1,00,000 population and highest prevalence 513.6/100,000 was noticed in Unayzah region. The Prevalence of breast cancer ranged from 373.7 to 513.6 per 100,000 in the cities screened of Qassim region. Conclusions: Based on the study results, the highest prevalence of breast cancer was noticed and also maximum prevalence was noticed in 35-40 yrs of age group. Prevalence varies from region to another and even in intraregional level also it depends upon their age, marital status and other ethnic and family histories. Now there is increase in population in Qassim region, increase in primary health centres, and also target population also increased. There was tremendous need of community based mammography screening programme proportionately as the needs of the risk population for early identification of the Breast cancer and to maintain good quality of life.
