REVIEW OF MUSALI IN SAMHITA GRANTHA, CHIKITSA GRANTHA & NIGHANTUS

ABSTRACT
Ayurveda is the traditional medicine of India and the oldest system of Health care in the world, a system of both preventive and curative medicine. Herbal medicine are major remedy of Traditional and Ayurvedic medicine system. Herbal or Ayurvedic medicine are less toxic or side effect. Medicinal plants are playing an important role in the drug discovery and development of new molecules. Musali is one of the important herb is used from ancient time and there are a lot of Pharmacological activity like aphrodisiac, antihepatotoxic, immunomodulator, antioxidant, anticancer and antidiabetic activities. Musali is used as an ingredient of a dhumradandika to alleviate cough by Acharya Charaka. Acharya Sushruta used Musali in vrana utsadana dravya, ashmari, vataj granthi, unmantha chikitsa and swas roga. In Raj nighantu it has been described as sweet, cooling, mucilaginous, increase kapha and reduces pitta daha (burning sensation), act as stimulant, gives strength. It is used in many Ayurvedic and Unani compound formulations as an important ingredient particularly in aphrodisiac preparation. The present article gives the literary information regarding the different uses of Musali in Samhita, Chikitsa grantha and Nighantus.
