Abstract
STUDENTS OPINION TOWARDS TEACHING LEARNING METHODS AND AUDIOVISUAL AIDS USED IN NURSING EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

Background: A lot of importance is given for teaching learning activities and use of various audiovisual aids in medical education. How students perceive these teaching learning activities and AV aids, affect their learning. Objectives: To understand the preference of nursing students regarding current teaching learning methods and audiovisual aids used in nursing. Methods: A quantitative approach with descriptive survey design was adopted. The study was conducted in selected nursing colleges. The variables under study were - students’ preference of teaching learning methods and audiovisual aids. Study sample consisted of 100 students who were selected using non probability convenience sampling technique. The tool used for the study was Demographic Proforma, and Likert scale to assess the preference of students regarding teaching methods and audiovisual aids used. Then the data was collected and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: The study result showed that majority (37%) of the study sample belong to the age group 17-24 years each. Majority (91%) were females. Majority (47%) were studying B. Sc. nursing. Majority (37%) were in the second year of course. Majority (78%) studied from state board of education. Majority (63%) studied in English medium schools. Half of the study samples studied in government school where as the other half went to the private school. Majority (93%) of the study samples have been exposed to audiovisual aids in school. The majority of the study sample strongly preferred field trip (52%), nursing rounds (55%), demonstration (80%), bedside teaching (58%), computers (61%), models and multimedia (49%), specimens (48%), LCD projector (66%), slide projector (53%), and blackboard also remained the most preferred (64%) AV aid. Among the sample majority (51%) preferred use of mix of AV aids. Conclusion: The study concluded that the nursing students have their own preferences for teaching learning methods and AV aids. Therefore the nursing faculty should use the methods wisely to make the teaching learning process interesting, interacting and effective.
