TAXONOMIC IDENTIFICATION OF FRESHWATER FISH DIVERSITY OF RIVER SONE, DISTRICT-SHAHDOL, MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA

ABSTRACT

Sone River is one of the major river of Shahdol region of Central India and flows through the Kaimur Range, an extension of the Vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the sub-basins of the Ganga and also one of the largest river of the India. River Sone is situated at the latitude 2106' and longitude of 800.3'. Total basin area of Sone River in Madhya Pradesh is 28,880 kmĀ² and total length of river is 784 kms. In Madhya Pradesh, the river flows for 470 kms. The river meets in the Ganga in Bihar state near Patna. In the present ichthyofaunal study of River Sone Order - Siluriformes (16 species) was dominant followed by Cypriniformes (15 species), Perciformes (07 species), Mastacembeliformes, Clupeiformes (02 species each) and Beloniformes (01 species). As per CAMP report, 4.65% of fishes belongs to lower risk least concern (LRlc), 39.53% lower risk near threatened (LRnt), 27.91% vulnerable (VU), 18.61% not evaluated (NE) and 9.30% endangered (EN) category and according to the IUCN, 79.07% of the fishes belongs to Least Concern (LC), 16.28% Near Threatened (NT) and 4.65% Data Deficient (DD).
