ABSTRACT

Background: Dental caries is one of the most widespread chronic infectious diseases in the world, individuals are prone to this disease throughout their generations. Dental caries is due to the irreversible solubilization of tooth mineral by acid produced by certain bacteria, such as Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) plays leading role in caries formation and lacto bacillus in its progression. Ginger has shown to have antibacterial effect against various organisms, an attempt is made to unveil the effect of ginger extract on S.mutans and L.acidophillus. Material & methods: Is an experimental in-vitro study conducted to assess the antibacterial effect of ginger, against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus. The ginger extracts was serially diluted using distilled water to obtain 1 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml, 7.5% mg/ml, 10 mg/ml solutions in sterile test tubes. The agar well diffusion method was employed for antibacterial activity testing. Results: The antibacterial effect on S.mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus using ginger with all the solvents had shown resistant at different concentrations. A zone of 16 mm was observed using 7.5mg/ml of ethyl alcohol extract of ginger. Conclusion: Ginger extract was found to possess antimicrobial potential against all the two pathogens used in the study.

Keywords: Ginger, S.mutans, L-acidophillus, Dental caries.
