ABSTRACT
Objectives: Haemoglobinopathies, mainly thalassaemias and Sickle Cell Anemia, are globally widespread. Sickle Cell Disease is the commonest genetic disorders in the tribal belt of Central and Southern India. Aim of the study was to assess the oral hygiene status of sickle cell anemic patients and compare it with non sickle cell anemic patients residing in same area of Dhamtari district, Chhattisgarh, India. Study design: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the oral health status among sickle cell anemic patients of
Dhamtari district, Chhattisgarh. Chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test was used to test the significance. Level of significance was set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: It was observed that majority of the participants in the study was in the age group of 25-34 years (sickle cell anaemic 157 and Non- sickle cell anaemic was 182 ) among this majority of the participants were male. Among the sickle cell anemic subjects, 58.9% had poor oral hygiene. The Oral Hygiene Index – Simplified score was statistically significant in Sickle and non sickle cell anemic subjects (P=0.000). Conclusion: Although oral health is not a priority for patients with SCD, it is supported by increased plaque accumulation. Because of the chronic anemic state of the patients with SCD, they should be encouraged to pay strict attention to oral hygiene instructions and practice. One of the main goals of dentist should be to instill a positive attitude in the patient and parents toward maintaining good dental health and quality of life.
