ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate anticancer activity and quantitative estimation of phenolics and flavonoids of Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum leaf extracts. Material and method: In this study quantitative estimation was determined, the total phenolic contents of Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum leaf extracts by using modified Folin-ciocalteu method and flavanoid content was determined by Aluminium chloride method. The in-vitro anticancer activity of Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum leaf extracts was determined and the results were compared with 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU) by MTT assay method. Results: After estimating the total phenolic contents of the Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum, IC50 values were as 2.86, 1.04 and for standard Gallic acid that was found out to be 8.04. The estimation of flavanoid content of Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum, the IC50 values are 33.36 and 32.45 and for standard Quercetin was found to be 17.42. The in vitro anticancer activity of both extracts and 5- Fluorouracil (5-FU) were determined by MTT assay method. The results of Melochia corchorifolia on HCT-116 cell line shows good percentage of anticancer activity when compared to MCF-07 cancer cell line and Saccharum officinarum shows good percentage of anticancer activity on MCF-07 cancer cell line but no activity on HCT-116 cell line. Conclusion: From the results obtained in this study, it was found that the phenolic compounds and flavanoids are present in both extracts. And these compounds may be responsible for anticancer activity of Melochia corchorifolia and Saccharum officinarum leaf extracts on HCT-116 and MCF-07 cancer cell lines.
