SYNONYMS AND THERAPEUTIC REVIEW OF GUDUCHI (TINOSPORA CORDIFOLIA (WILLD.) MIERS EX HOOK. F. & THOMSON) COMMONLY KNOWN AS AMRITVALLI: FROM KOSHA AND NIGHANTUS

ABSTRACT

Traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) have been in practice in a great account. Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook. f. & Thomson (Guduchi) is a widely used shrub in folk and Ayurvedic systems of medicine. This review presents a detailed survey of the literature on chemistry and medicinal properties of Tinospora cordifolia. Tinospora cordifolia is a climbing deciduous shrub. It is found throughout tropical part of India and also found in China, Bangladesh, Myanmar & Srilanka. This plant belongs to the family Menispermaceae. The notable medicinal properties are anti-diabetic,anti-periodic, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-oxidant, anti-allergic, antistress, anti-leprotic, anti-malarial, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory and anti-neoplastic activities. In this work a Nighantu of Sushruta named Sausruta Nighantu and another by Vagbhata the Astanga Nighantu are discussed. The present work aims to discuss Guduchi in various Nighantus as manuscripts or just as evidence - in a chronological order.
