ABSTRACT
Ashwagandhadi Churna is a modified Herbo-mineral formulation of Ashwagandhapaka mentioned in Yogaratnakara. It is described in the context of Prameha Chikitsa. This formulation is originally suggested in the form of Paka, but it was modified into Churna and the part of Milk and Sugar was removed as it was planned to give in Diabetic patients. Method: The finished product is subjected to microscopic evaluation, physico-chemical analysis like loss on drying, ash value, pH value, water soluble extract, alcohol soluble extract, High Performance thin layer chromatography(HPTLC) etc. Results: Pharmacognostical study showed the presence of Trichome of Shringataka, Simple starch grain of Ashwagandha, Tanin content of Khadira, Fibres of Twaka, Epidermal cells of Lavanga, Epicarp cells of Bhallataka along with oleoresin content, Epidermal cells with spiral vessels of Teja patra, oil globule & Fibers of Chandana & Ela, Rhomboidal crystal of Patala, Pitted vessels of Kankola, Epicarp cells of Ela, epicarp cells of Jatiphala & Akshotaka, Pollengrain of Nagakesara & Lavanga etc. Preliminary physico-chemical analysis showed that ash value 6.8%, loss on drying 6.1%, water soluble extract 32.15 and HPTLC showed four spots in 254nm and three spot in 366nm. Conclusion: Present work was carried out to standardize the finished product Ashwagandhadi Churna in terms of its identity, quality and purity. Pharmacognostical and Physico-chemical observations revealed all the specific characters of active constituents in the preparation.
Keywords: Ashwagandhadi Churna, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical, HPTLC.
