ABSTRACT

Organophosphorus poisoning is the most common mode of poisoning in rular population of agrarian countries. The aim of present study was to assess the effect of organophosphorus poisoning on pseudo cholinesterase & liver enzymes. Total 110 patients between the period of August 2013 to September 2014 were studied. After applying the inclusion & exclusion criteria, a total of 60 patients were eligible for the study. The data was collected and compared with 60 age and sex matched healthy controls. The statistical analysis was done using SPSS 17.0 software. Pseudocholinesterase was decreased significantly on 1st day of admission of patient (p<0.001) & after 48 hours of the treatment, the level of pseudocholinesterase was increased significantly (p<0.001) but not upto the control level. The AST & ALT were elevated slightly (p<0.01) when compared with the controls but not above the normal range. Our data indicates that, the pseudocholinestarase can be shown to be a marker of diagnostic value in organophosphorous poisoning. Decreased activity of pseudocholinestarase was significantly correlating with registered cases of organophosphorous poisoning. Receiver Operating Curve analysis showed pseudocholinesterase is the best discriminatory marker in the diagnosis of patients exposed to organophosphorous poisoning.

Keywords: Cholinesterase, Pseudocholinesterase, Liver enzymes, Organophosphorous Poisoning.
