ABSTRACT
This work was done to determine the enzymatic antioxidants in strreptozocin-induced diabetic rats treated with moringa oleifera leaf. This was conducted using 5 groups of 10 rats each were used. Group1 negative control, group2 positive control (diabetics), groups 3 and 4 treated with 150mg/kg and 300mg/kg of moringa oleifera leaf respectively. The parameters analysed includes; glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase P. values p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the liver GSH-Px levels of rats in groups 2,3 and 4 (307 ±.34, 296.6 ±52.64, 272.95 ±68.18) respectively when compared with group 1(424.58 ±102.65). Also, there was significant increase in the liver SOD levels of the rats in group 2, 3 and 4 (2.99±1.92, 3.27±.81 and 5.12±1.09) respectively, when compared with that of group 1(1.42±1.20). There was no significant difference in the liver catalase levels of the rats across the groups, but there is a significant increase in the CAT levels of the rats in group 3 (66.21±4.33), when compared with the rats in groups 1, and 2 (63.21± 17.37 and 57.10±13.73). It could be inferred that moringa oleifera leaf powder used in treatment of streptozocin-induced diabetes in rats reduced oxidative stress and reduced the toxic damage to the kidney and liver.
