The nail disorders are mainly due to the fungal infection. The topical therapy is high desirable in treating nail disorder due to it localized effect and possibly improve adherence. The aim of the review is to explore the difficulties in penetration of drug across nail plate and enhancement of bioavailability of antifungal drug. Synergistic combination of systemic with topical delivery is generally preferred for efficient treatment of onychomycosis, a condition most affecting nails. Sophisticated techniques like nail abrasion, keratolytic enhancers, ultraviolet light, Iontophoresis has been found to enhance the nail penetration. The current review article on nail plate permeation focusses on altering nail, nail plate barrier by means of chemical treatment, penetration enhancers further as physical and mechanical methods.
