Abstract
NANOEMULSION BASED HYDROGELS FOR TOPICAL DELIVERY OF TADALAFIL: FORMULATION, PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND IN VITRO DRUG RELEASE STUDIES

Fatemeh Shariat Razavi and Anayatollah Salimi*

ABSTRACT

In this work, we prepared and evaluated tadalafil (TDF) nanoemulsion (NE) hydrogel. The TDF-NE hydrogel was composed of Oleic acid as the oil phase, Tween80 as the surfactant, ethanol and transcotoul P as the cosurfactant and Carbopol 934 as the gelling agent with 1 and 3%. The physicochemical characteristics such as particle size, PDI, viscosity experiments, pH and drug content percentage of the TDF-NE gel formulations were evaluated. In vitro release studies were carried out using Franz diffusion cells. The release from NE–gel formulations followed Koresemeyer – Peppas model with fickian diffusion mechanism. The release profile of TDF from all NE-gel formulations was significant as compared to a drug suspension and higher drug release was observed with NE-gel formulations.

Keywords: Tadalafil, Nanoemulsion, Hydrogel.
