COMMUNITY PHARMACY PRACTICE AMIDST COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN STA. MARIA, BULACAN

ABSTRACT

Background: COVID-19 outbreak harmed the service systems of many establishments that caused significant changes in interacting with the customers and patients, just like in a community pharmacy. COVID-19 pandemic has affected patient-centered care practice in pharmacy service, including dispensing, patient medication counseling, and other community pharmacy services requiring close contact with the patients. Objective: This study aims to determine the views of community pharmacists in Sta. Maria, Bulacan regarding the community pharmacy practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A descriptive quantitative approach was used in this study to explore and understand the views of community pharmacists in Sta. Maria, Bulacan regarding the community pharmacy practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. Convenience and snowball sampling was utilized to obtain the 71 respondents and an online survey was sent to collect the data. Results: A total of 71 community pharmacists participated in the survey. 63.4% of the respondents are working in independent drugstores and 36.6% in chain drugstores. The study findings indicate that the services rendered in a community pharmacy are not always practiced during the pandemic because of the restrictions such as social distancing. The safety and security measures, as well as the COVID-19 safety protocol implemented are always observed in order to protect the pharmacy employees and the public. Community pharmacists view their roles, duties, and responsibilities as very significant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Community pharmacies have experienced challenges and became innovative to continuously deliver pharmacy services.
