VIRECHANA KARMA A BOON IN THE MANAGEMENT OF PAKSHAGHATA – A CRITICAL ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT

Developing countries like India are facing burden of many diseases such as stroke which causes death and disability. This is one such disease which need an immediate care and treatment. The estimated adjusted prevalence rate of stroke in India ranges from 84-262/1,00,000 in rural and 334-424/1,00,000 in urban areas. The incidence rate is 119-145/1,00,000 based on the recent population based study. Pakshaghata is nearest clinical entity for stroke, But the word stroke is not just limited to pakshaghata it even indicates dysphagia, diplopia etc. Pakshaghata is one among 80 Vataja nanatmaja vikaras, in which one half of the body is affected. The Pratyatma Lakshana of this disease is loss of function, speech, sensation etc. Margavarana and Dhatu kshaya are two reasons for any Vatavyadhi which can be understood as Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Strokes respectively. According to different Acharyas Virechana which is one among panchakarma is told as important line of management in Pakshaghata. Panchakarma is a purification process which help to detox the whole body, improves digestion, offers calming effect physically as well as mentally and helps to maintain the normal physiological functioning of the body. Though this is a Vata Pradhana vyadhi Basti chikitsa is not given priority as Basti is consider as Ardha chikitsa in vatavyadhi, still the prime importance is given to Virechana. This paper emphasize the critical analysis of role of virechana karma  karma in pakshaghata with the help of literature.
