SURVEY OF THE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN EKOSODI AREA OF OVIA-NORTH EAST AREA OF EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Background: Municipal solid waste is continually a major cause of worry due to increase in population and development. There has been continuous increase in solid waste generation and lack of solid waste management in most communities in Benin City, Edo State of Nigeria. This is due to ignorance, lackadecical altitude and poor policy administration and implementation by the government. Ekosodi community is one among others with problem of municipal waste management. The survey was aimed at assessing the prevailing method of solid waste management in Ekosodin community. Methods: The method used was field research by collecting data relative to the methods of waste disposal in the community by the use of structured Questionnaire. Thirty houses were randomly sampled from selected major street in Ekosodi (Market road, Newton road, Ekosodi primary school road, Boundry road, winners’ and JB road) using a multiple-stage random sampling procedures. A total of 1200 questionnaires were administered with forty questionnaires per compound. Results: It was discovered that the improper waste management, lack of education and poor housing condition were key factors of the poor waste management in the area of study. Conclusion: The government and private owned solid waste disposal companies should collaborate to effectively manage the solid waste in the area.
