ABSTRACT

The leave extracts cymbopogan citratum and occimum gratissimum are ayurvedic medicinal plants used in Nigeria to treat several ailments. Previous studies indicated that these plants possess hypolipidemic and antioxidant potential, functions which are preventive. The present study was aimed at investigating the therapeutic effects of these plants on already established diabetes in rats. Three different treatments (400 mg/kg, given for four weeks) used in this study effectively Demonstrated significant (p< 0.05) homeostatic re-alignment on disrupted lipid parameters caused by diabetes in hypercholesterolemic rats. Further, all three treatments also improved significantly (p< 0.05) the electrolyte profile status Overall, combination (mixture of the two plant extracts had the maximum effect on hypercholesterolemic rats followed by individual extracts when administered singly that may be due to varying concentrations of the different classes of phytocomponents. In conclusion, the mixture, synergistically, produced a far reaching positive influence on general body homeostasis taking into consideration, glucose, lipids, electrolytes and urea and creatinine balance.
