ROLE OF AYURVEDIC TREATMENT IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS – A SINGLE CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a long-term condition that results in inflammation and ulcers of the colon and rectum. Each year it newly occurs in 1 to 20 per 100,000 people, and 5 to 500 per 100,000 individuals are affected. Dietary changes, several medications and removal of the colon by surgery may be necessary if the disease is severe. A 33 year old male patient visited Panchakarma OPD with known case of ulcerative colitis from 3 years; with complain of Sarakta Mala Pravritti, Gudapradeshe Daha, Mala Privriti 3-4 time/day etc. Patient was taking oral allopathic treatment. According to principles of Ayurveda he was diagnosed as case of Raktatisara. He was under Ayurvedic management like Pichchha Basti, Shirodhara etc. along with milk diet for 15 days continuously. After 15 days, relief in symptoms was seen in patient.
