ABSTRACT
Herbal medicine is making a dramatic comeback as the side effect of synthetic medicine are daunting and the therapeutic approach is drifting towards substituent medicine. Myricetin is a common plant-derived flavonoid and is well recognised for its nutraceuticals value. It is one of the key ingredients of various foods and beverages. The compound exhibits a wide range of activities that include strong anti-oxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activities. It displays several activities that are related to the central nervous system and numerous studies have suggested that the compound may be beneficial to protect against diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. M. fragrans is a spreading, medium to large sized, aromatic evergreen tree usually growing to around 5-13 m high, occasionally 20 m. Fruit oval or pyriform, drooping, yellow, smooth, 6-9 cm long with a longitudinal ridge and a fleshy husk. When ripe, husk splits into 2 halves revealing a purplish-brown, shiny seed surrounded by a leathery red or crimson network of tissue. It is a well-known aromatic perennial plant with a characteristic scent that possesses multiple medicinal applications, being used to treat stomach ulcers, indigestion, liver disorders, and as emmenagogue, nervine, diuretic, diaphoretic, and aphrodisiac. Nutmeg essential oil has been used as a natural flavoring agent and as a perfume in the cosmetic industries. Owing to its demonstrated antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, nutmeg essential oil is considered to be a promising biopreservative. Phyochemical screening tests showed the presence of flavonoid derivative. Physical and chemical tests of isolated compound was conducted. Preparative TLC of the methanolic extract using n-Butanol:Acetic acid:water (4:1:5),at Rf value 0.43 , Myricetin was isolated. By using IR, spectra of the isolated compound was confirmed.
Keywords: emmenagogue, nervine, diuretic, diaphoretic, and aphrodisiac.
