ABSTRACT
Background: The present study was carried out to determine the incidence of adverse drug reactions in the general medicine department and to assess and analyze the casualty, severity and preventability of ADR. The severity is carried out using the Modified Hartwig and Siegel scale. Method: A Prospective observational study was conducted over 4 months in General Medicine Department at Owaisi hospital. A suitable patient profile form and ADR’s forms was designed to collect and document the data. During this study period, the case sheets of hospitalized patients of the general medicine department were reviewed on daily basis. Patient demographic details like age, gender, diagnosis, past medical history, concomitant medications etc, are recorded from the patient gathering data form. Result and Discussion: Out of the total 100 cases evaluated 50% were males and 50% were females. In Males the ADRs observed was 12%, Whereas in Females the ADRs observed were 10% i.e slightly lower than Males. ADRs were more common in Males when compared to females. Conclusion: It was found that antibiotics were the major class of drugs that induces ADR. Diarrhea was found to be predominant ADR and majority of ADR were found to be definite according to Naranjo’s assessment scale. The Adverse drug reactions were similar in male and female patients. The common class of drugs that are responsible for ADRs were antibiotics followed by corticosteroids and anti-hypertensive.
