REVIEW ARTICLE ON IMPORTANCE OF LEPA KALPANA IN KEETA VISHA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO WASP STING

ABSTRACT
Agadatantra comes under ashtangas of Ayurveda. It is also known as damshtrachikitsa.It deals with signs, symptoms and management of poisoning, resulting from bites of snakes, insects, spiders, rats etc and various other poisons produced by improper combination of substances or drugs. Agadatantra deals in detail about sthavara, jangama and krithrima visha. Keetavisha which is being included under jangama visha has been dealt in detail in Agadatantra It is estimated that between one and two million people in India are severely allergic to stinging insect venom. Each year 90 to 100 deaths from sting reactions are reported. Wasp stings are usually common during the warmer months when people are outside for longer periods of time. Wasp can be compared with Kanabha one among the keeta visha. Wasp inject venom by stinging.Sometimes the stinger may be left in the skin.The venom is poisonous& cause direct injury to the human body.This injury is usually confined to the area close to the sting. Most of the cases involve one or few stings where only symptoms without any serious reactions. In such cases vishagnalepas can be used as it nullifies harmful and poisonous effect. Lepa, which is the mode of application of drugs externally, is included under the Bahiparimarjana chikitsa according to Ayurveda. It is relevant in the management of Sthanika vikaras. It is a form of Kalka kalpana.
