ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the incidence rate of laryngeal carcinoma among patients with dysphonia underwent direct laryngoscopy and biopsy taken from laryngeal mass under general anesthesia in Prince Rashid military hospital in Irbid. Method: Retrospective study conducted between June/2019 to April/2022, and includes all patients attended to Oto-rhino-laryngology clinic complaining of dysphonia and found to have laryngeal mass after laryngeal examination by flexible fiberoptic naso-pharyngo-laryngoscope or by indirect laryngoscope. Biopsies from laryngeal mass and suspicious lesions were taken under general anesthesia by direct laryngoscope. Collected specimens were sent to histopathology to establish definitive diagnosis. Results: A total of 34 patients were found complaining of dysphonia and have laryngeal mass during the study period. 73.5% of patients were males and 26.5% were females. The age of patients ranged from 17 years to 76 years, and the mean age was (47.7 ± 2.7) years. Invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was confirmed by histopathology results in 8 patients. Mild to moderate dysplasia was reported in one case, and cancer in situ was observed in one patient. On the other hand, benign lesions were reported in 17 patients. Conclusion: Persistent dysphonia for more than three weeks is a significant indication for laryngeal examination. Hoarseness was found to be very common in patients with vocal cord masses and consider as major contributor to early detection of laryngeal cancer. The incidence rate of laryngeal cancer confirmed by histopathology results were reported in 23.5% of total collected specimens.
