ABSTRACT
The present work deals with the chemoprofiling and determination of antioxidant activity of flower extract of Matricaria chamomilla. The phytochemicals from the flowers of Matricaria chamomilla were extracted qualitatively in methanol and confirmed by performing various chemical tests. The antioxidant activity of flower extract was performed by using DPPH method with solvents of different polarity viz. petroleum ether, dimethyl sulfoxide and methanol. The IC50 (50 % inhibition of DPPH) value of antioxidant activity of flower extract was calculated from the graph for each solvent. The flower extract showed presence of various biologically important secondary metabolites like alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, phenolic compounds and tannins. The IC50 value of DPPH free radical scavenging activity in petroleum ether, dimethyl sulfoxide and methanolic extract of flower was found 1.009± 0.0091 mg/ml, 0.518± 0.0045 mg/ml and 0.447± 0.0036 mg/ml respectively. The present study reveals that Matricaria chamomilla is medicinally important plant and it can be well exploited for making variety of pharmaceutical preparations.
Keywords: Matricaria chamomilla, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, DPPH.
