EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BENIGN AND MALIGNANT BREAST DISEASES IN PATIENTS WITH BREAST LUMP IN EASTERN NEPAL

ABSTRACT
Background: Breast diseases are common among women worldwide. Breast lump is the most common presenting symptom. Most breast lumps are benign but the concern of a breast lump being malignant makes a woman seek medical assistance. Lump biopsy (FNAC or Trucut) is the most definitive method of identifying malignant breast disease. Materials and method: This is a retrospective study done at a tertiary referral center in Eastern Nepal (BPKIHS). All patients with breast lump who presented to outpatient ward and underwent tissue biopsy (FNAC or Trucut) were included in the study. Result: Breast lump was the presenting symptom 90% of the cases. 81% of the breast lumps were benign while 19% were malignant. Benign lesions were most common in the 21-30 year age group. Breast cancer was common in the 51-60 year age group. Fibroadenoma (40%) was the most common benign lesion. Conclusion: Breast lump is the most common complaint of a patient with breast disease. Probability of a breast lump being benign is high. Malignancy is common in the 5th decade of life and benign diseases in the second decade.
