COMPARISON OF LIP PRINTS PATTERN AMONG BENGALI AND NEPALI PEOPLE

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Identification defines the individualism of a person which is decisive in civil and criminal cases. The exploration of lip prints can perform an ultimate role as being inimitable for each individual. Objectives: To determine uniqueness and predominant pattern of lip prints in Bengali and Nepali people for gender identity and association. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with 140 subjects, comprising 70 people with Bengali origin and 70 people with Nepali origin including 35 males and 35 females in each group selected randomly from Siliguri, West Bengal. Lip prints were traced in normal rest position of the lips. Lip prints obtained were scanned and evaluated using Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification. Results: In present study on overall subject-wise comparison it was observed that Type-I was most common lip prints pattern in all the quadrants which was statistically significant. Analysing gender-wise distributions of lip prints, results differed somewhat between males and females and was statistically significant. In females Type-I’ was the most common pattern while in males Type-I was the most common. On comparing Bengali and Nepali origin people Type-I was the most common pattern in Bengali people followed by Type-II whereas in case of Nepali people Type-I was the most common lip prints pattern followed by Type-I’. Conclusion: Lip prints analysis can provide both qualitative and quantitative results. Cheiloscopy witness enormous potential in gender determination and identification. It aptitudes to be one of the golden gears in forensic dentistry which can do miracles in future.
