ABSTRACT
The oldest branch of life science, Astanga Ayurveda, has eight branches that each focus on a particular therapeutic feature. One of these, the Shalya Tantra, addresses concepts related to surgery and parasurgery. The Sushruta Samhita, a compendium written by Acharya Sushruta, contains surgical guidelines for doing safe surgery and is widely regarded as the father of surgery. The Shalya Chikitsa discusses several surgical techniques for treating various disorders like Pilonidal Sinus, Bhagandra and Arshas, etc. "Trividha Karma" and "Ashtavidha Shastra Karma" are two modalities suggested by Acharya Sushruta. Acharya Sushruta made a special contribution with the idea of Ashtavidha karma. Any disorders that require surgical intervention can be managed using these eight distinct surgical techniques. Ashtavidha Shastra Karma includes techniques like; Chhedana, Bhedana, Lekhana, Eshana, Aharana, Visravana and Seevana Karma. These eight surgical techniques are still utilized today in the field of modern surgery to treat surgical diseases. The role of Ashtvidha Shastra Karma in Shalya Karma for the treatment of various surgical issues is summarized in this article.
