ABSTRACT
Asthma is defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder of airways in which many cells and cellular elements play a
role. The chronic inflammation is associated with airway hyper-responsiveness that leads to recurrent episodes of
wheezing, breathlessness and coughing particularly at night or early morning. There are many causes of asthma
include genetic, environmental factors, exposure to allergens, occupation irritant tobacco smoke, respiratory
infection exercise, strong emotional expression, chemical irritant and drugs. The characteristics features of asthma
are leukocyte infiltration epithelial sloughing, basement membrane thickening, edema and hyperplasia of the
mucus-secreting glands, and hypertrophy of bronchial smooth muscles. The diagnosis of asthma requires a
comprehensive medical history, physical examination and further testing to confirm the diagnosis of asthma to
rule out other diseases that may present with symptoms that mimic asthma. The Pharmacological therapy
comprising of short acting beta-2 agonist and long acting beta-2 agonist with inhaled corticosteroids and oral
corticosteroids. Aim and objective: aim of the study is to compare the effectiveness of buteyko breathing
technique versus breathing retraining on peak expiratory flow rate and quality of life in subjects with
bronchial asthma. Methods: 78 subjects who were diagnosed with bronchial asthma were selected from the
outpatient department of GSL Medical College and General Hospital, Rajahmahendravaram. The study was
conducted during the period between July 2020 and June 2021. Prospective study Design. Four times a week for
six weeks. Results: all 78 subjects completed the entire study program as defined by 6 week in the outpatient
department basis. To observe the intervention impact before and after the intervention in the groups, analysis is
carried out by using paired t-test. Conclusion: Buteyko breathing technique is more effective when compared
to breathing retraining in peak expiratory flow rate and quality of life related to health in subjects with
bronchial asthma.
