IN VITRO ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MODELS USED IN BIOACTIVITY STUDY OF CRUDE HERBAL EXTRACT; AN EVALUATIVE REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Inflammation is a complex physiological process that plays an essential role in the body's defense mechanism
against infection and injury. However, chronic inflammation can lead to the development of several diseases, such
as arthritis, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. The use of herbal medicine has been documented for centuries in
the treatment of various ailments, including inflammation. The development of a model that imitates or induces
the creation or release of the biochemical mediators of inflammation, as well as the observation of these mediators'
reactions to test medications, are necessary for studies on anti-inflammatory activity. This review aims to evaluate
the various assays that are widely used to assess the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of extracts of herbal
components. The extensive body of reviews and research publications reporting on the anti-inflammatory
properties of extracts and/or pure chemicals produced from natural sources are summarized in this study. Since
animal ethics are equally crucial to human welfare and well-being as in vitro anti-inflammatory investigations, we
advise reducing the use of animals in these experiments.
